"Ciao!" And welcome to Living in Italian, by Adesso Italian. One real situation from life in Italy, in under ten minutes.
- Host
Today: the "comune", the town hall. When you move to a new address in Italy, you declare it at the "anagrafe", the registry office. It's called "la residenza", and you need it for your ID card, for the family doctor, and for a lot of paperwork after that.
- Host
By the end, you'll know how to ask, what they'll ask you, and what happens next.
- Host
Quick note: the voices you hear are AI-generated. Every script is written for real life in Italy and checked by a native Italian speaker.
- Host
Let's go, line by line.
- Host
The clerk says: "Buongiorno, prego. Mi dica." Good morning, go ahead, how can I help? And you say:
- Voice 1
Vorrei fare il cambio di residenza.
- Host
"Il cambio di residenza" is the change of residence: registering your new address. Even if it's your first address in Italy, Italians still say "fare la residenza".
- Host
Next: "Ha compilato la dichiarazione?" Have you filled in the declaration? That's the form, and most comuni have it on their website.
- Host
You hand it over: "Sì, eccola." Here it is. "Eccola", with an A, because "la dichiarazione" is feminine. Then:
- Voice 1
E qui c'è una copia del contratto d'affitto.
- Host
And here's a copy of the rental contract. Bring it, together with your passport or ID and your "codice fiscale".
- Host
The clerk asks: "Vive da sola o con altre persone?" Do you live alone or with other people? And the answer:
- Voice 1
Vivo da sola.
- Host
"Da sola": alone, for a woman. A man says "da solo". And you'll hear the clerk say "da sola" to a woman, "da solo" to a man.
- Host
Then a question that surprises everyone: "Il suo nome è sul campanello?" Is your name on the doorbell? "Il campanello" is the doorbell.
- Host
Why? Because in the next few days the local police, "la polizia locale", come to check that you really live there. If they can't find your name, they can't find you.
- Host
So you ask how long it takes:
- Voice 1
Quanto tempo ci vuole per la conferma?
- Host
How long does it take to be confirmed? The answer: "Se entro quarantacinque giorni non riceve niente, è tutto a posto." If you don't hear anything within forty-five days, it's all fine.
- Host
And when the answer is long and fast, the best sentence of the day:
- Voice 1
Scusi, me lo può scrivere, per favore?
- Host
Sorry, could you write it down for me, please? Nobody minds. And always ask for "la ricevuta", the receipt, with the date on it.
- Host
Your turn. I'll say a sentence in English. In the pause, say it in Italian, out loud. Then listen to the answer.
- Host
I'd like to register my new address.
- Voice 1
Vorrei fare il cambio di residenza.
- Host
Here's a copy of the contract.

- Voice 1
Il mio nome non è ancora sul campanello.
- Host
Italy, decoded. The twenty-day rule.
- Host
When you move, you should declare your new address within twenty days. Your residency counts from the day you declare it, not from the day it's confirmed.
- Host
Many comuni let you send the declaration by email or certified email, the "PEC", without queueing. Check your comune's website first: it can save you a morning.
- Host
And once you're a resident, you can ask the same comune for the electronic ID card, "la carta d'identità elettronica", usually by appointment.
- Host
Now, the full conversation again. This time, you'll understand all of it.
- Voice 2
