"Ciao!" And welcome to Living in Italian, by Adesso Italian. One real situation from life in Italy, in under ten minutes.
- Host
Today: your neighbours. Most Italians live in a "condominio", a building shared by many families, with its own rules, its own manager, and its own meetings.
- Host
By the end, you'll be able to introduce yourself on the stairs, ask about the bins, and know who to call.
- Host
Quick note: the voices you hear are AI-generated. Every script is written for real life in Italy and checked by a native Italian speaker.
- Host
Let's go, line by line.
- Host
Your neighbour starts: "Buonasera! Lei è la nuova vicina del terzo piano?" Good evening! Are you the new neighbour on the third floor?
- Host
"La vicina" is a woman neighbour, "il vicino" a man. And Italians say "buonasera" from mid-afternoon on. You answer:
- Voice 1
Sì, piacere. Sono Kate. Mi sono trasferita la settimana scorsa.
- Host
"Piacere": nice to meet you. "Mi sono trasferita": I moved here. A man says "trasferito". "La settimana scorsa": last week.
- Host
He says: "Benvenuta! Si trova bene?" Welcome! Are you settling in well? "Trovarsi bene" is how Italians ask if you like a place. Then you ask the real question:
- Voice 1
Scusi, posso chiederle una cosa? Dove si butta la spazzatura?
- Host
"Posso chiederle una cosa?": can I ask you something? Polite and perfect with anyone. "Buttare la spazzatura" is to throw out the rubbish.
- Host
The answer: "I bidoni sono in cortile. Qui si fa la raccolta differenziata." The bins are in the courtyard. Here we separate the rubbish: paper, plastic, glass, food waste.
- Host
You ask: "E quando ritirano la carta?" And when do they collect the paper? "Il giovedì": on Thursdays. And: "Il calendario è in bacheca." The calendar is on the notice board.
- Host
Then a question about money:
- Voice 1
E per le spese del condominio, a chi devo chiedere?
- Host
"Le spese del condominio" are the building's shared costs: cleaning, the lift, the lights on the stairs. "A chi devo chiedere?": who should I ask? The answer: "All'amministratore", the building manager.
- Host
And the famous "assemblea di condominio", the residents' meeting. Kate asks: "Devo andarci anche se sono in affitto?" Do I have to go even if I'm renting?
- Host
The answer: usually the owner goes, but you're welcome. And you close with thanks. He answers:
- Voice 1
Si figuri.
- Host
Not at all, don't mention it. With a friend you'd say "figurati".
- Host
Your turn. I'll say a sentence in English. In the pause, say it in Italian, out loud. Then listen to the answer.

Italy, decoded. Who pays, and who votes.
- Host
If you rent, you usually pay the ordinary shared costs, like cleaning and the lift, often together with the rent. Big works on the building are the owner's. Your contract says how it's split.
- Host
At the residents' meeting the owners vote. Tenants usually don't, but for a few things, like central heating, tenants can have a say.
- Host
And the bins: every comune has its own rules and its own calendar. Get the separation wrong and the bag can be left behind, sometimes with a note. So check the calendar.
- Host
Now, the full conversation again. This time, you'll understand all of it.
